Memphis-based interior designer Biggs Powell began his namesake firm in 2002, and since then he has made a big splash in the design world, landing coverage in magazines such as Southern Accents and Veranda. In 2003, House Beautiful named him one of "America's Top Young Designers," and while he notes
that his design work is classically inspired, he is quick to point out that he loves period rooms as well as classic modern design.
Besides his work with interiors, another aspect of Biggs' firm is his extensive inventory of antiques and decorative objects from the 19th to the late 20th centuries. His pieces are sold online on his website as well as on the noted decorative arts design
site www.1stdibs.com, and by appointment at his design studio. "I try to find things that are interesting based on texture, form and finish regardless of age or pedigree," he says.

Layering early 20th century pieces with more traditional French and English antiques is forte. Using lighting as an example, Biggs is a proponent of juxtaposing contradictory elements in order to add an unexpected counterpoint to a room, whether it's a period crystal chandelier to lend a surprise in a modern space or a pair of
vintage Murano lamps to enliven a traditional room. "I stress the functionality of a space," says Biggs, who enjoys the careful use of color to create mood and flow. "I try to weigh the functionality of a space equally with the aesthetics," he says, noting that ideally, spaces are both visually interesting and physically comfortable.
While skilled with working with new construction, the character and solidity of older homes particularly appeals to Biggs, who has tackled numerous renovation projects for clients. Whether an older home or new construction, he focuses first on appropriate architectural details that achieve the correct scale and proportion before the "decoration." With
good bones in place, he is able to create ideal interiors truly meant for living.
